Salman also announced a $150 million donation for the upkeep of Islamic heritage sites in eastern Yerushalayim.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman will chair Sunday's summit in the eastern city of Dhahran, home to Saudi Arabia's oil giant Aramco and 160 kilometres (100 miles) across the Gulf from Iran.

"East Jerusalem is an integral part of the Palestinian territories", he asserted.

Moreover, the summit affirmed the role of the General Secretariat of the Arab League as being responsible of monitoring the execution of the report's previously mentioned recommendations, in coordination with the member states.

Syria's war, the most complex of the region's conflicts, is the main point of contention pitting Riyadh and its allies, who mainly back Sunni rebels, against regime backer Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

The meeting opened only 24 hours after a barrage of strikes launched by the United States, Britain and France hit targets they said were linked to chemical weapons development in Syria, which was suspended from the league seven years ago.

During the summit, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz criticized Tehran's influence on Arab countries, claiming that it violated the principles of worldwide law.

The heads of Arab states will renew their rejection of US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, slated for May.

Iran has said that the Arab League should take steps towards helping restore stability in the region instead of repeating its lies and baseless allegations against Tehran.

The summit comes as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt are locked off in a months-long diplomatic dispute with Qatar accusing it of supporting terrorism.

In a statement on Sunday, Bahram Qassemi reiterated Iran's principled policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Western states have accused the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of an April 7 attack using chemicals in the Syrian town of Douma. Doha denies the charges and says the boycott is an attempt to impinge on its sovereignty.

But the leaders were divided over the US-led air strikes against Syria.

An Arab League summit called on Sunday for an worldwide probe into the "criminal" use of chemical weapons in Syria and condemned what it saw as Iran's interference in the affairs of other countries.

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani headed Qatar's delegation at last year's Arab summit in Jordan.

Tunisia will host the next Arab League summit in 2019.
