As Necco Wafers near their end, fans come out of the woodwork

People are now panic-buying America's least-favorite candy

A Florida woman really loves Necco Wafers, the colorful sweets made by a Revere-based company that is now as at risk of shutting down.

Necco Wafers is a popular candy in the USA, where it has been produced since 1847.

Samuels said the candy is nostalgic to her because she used to pretend play "church" at her grandmother's house and would take Communion with the sweets. "It's a staple and I thought it would be around forever", he said.

"I offered to trade my 2003 Honda Accord for all of their stock", a woman told The Globe. "I don't have much right now, so I was like, 'I've got this auto, and I want all that candy, so maybe they would consider it'".

Candy store owner David Sapers is stocking up on candy in the meantime. "So I did that because first of all, they don't go bad".

The candy has been described as "chalky", but that hasn't stopped fans from seeking out the Sweethearts Valentine's Day sweets as well as the Mary Janes, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Clark Bars. The Wall Street Journal said the candy has been described as "tropical drywall", "plaster surprise" and "attic citrus."

On its company blog, CandyStore.com noted a 50 percent uptick in Necco sales over the past few weeks, with sales of Necco Wafers jumping up 63 percent.

But if the factory in Revere closes, almost 400 jobs will be lost.

Both Necco wafers and Sweethearts are more known for their chalky consistency and being hard to find.

The Boston Globe reported last month that Necco - the New England Confectionary Co. - would lay off most of its workforce.
