Baby's parents lose court battle over life support

Parents of Alfie Evans Launch Fresh Legal Challenge to Keep Son Alive

Parents of Alfie Evans Launch Fresh Legal Challenge to Keep Son Alive

The Court of Appeal in the United Kingdom ruled against the parents of a 23-month-old boy on life support.

Alfie, born in May of 2016, suffers from an unknown neurological degenerative condition which hospital staff say has reduced him to a vegetative state and corroded his brain matter.

The toddler's parents, Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, appealed the decision, but today, three appeal judges ruled against them.

Doctors have been ordered to keep treating Alfie as they wait for the outcome.

The couple, from Liverpool, have already lost cases in the high court, court of appeal, supreme court and European court of human rights.

Like any parent of a very sick child, Alfie's parents want to be able to spend as much time with him as possible while he's in the hospital - especially with a protracted legal battle that could result in yanking his life support and ending his life at any time.

The couple's attorney, Paul Diamond, standing counsel to the Christian Legal Centre, argued that not allowing Alfie to be transferred to another hospital went against Alfie's liberty, according to LifeSiteNews.

Police are now entering Alder Hey hospital as a crowd of protesters gathers outside chanting "save Alfie Evans!"

Alder Hey Children's Hospital said in a statement: "At each stage of the legal process the courts have agreed with expert advisers... that Alfie's condition is untreatable".

Lord Justice Moylan said that when there's a disagreement between the parents' wishes and the best interests of the child, the latter must prevail, LifeSiteNews reported.

The force also urged people to consider other hospital users at Alder Hey, adding the emotional scenes outside the children's hospital caused "significant traffic disruption and inconvenience" to others.

The parents do, however, have the right to directly ask the Supreme Court for permission to appeal.

Those hearings led to Mr Justice Hayden setting a time and date for life support to be switched off at a High Court Hearing earlier this week.

The court ruled that his life support won't be turned off until the Supreme Court has reached its decision.

Crowds of demonstrators have gathered and remained outside Alder Hey hospital in constant protest to support Alfie and his parents' attempts to seek continued treatment for him.

Hayden said details of that plan could not be revealed because Alfie was entitled to privacy at the end of his life.

The parents lost their bid to allow Alfie to be taken overseas for treatment.

"The awful reality was that nearly the entirety of Alfie's brain has been eroded, leaving only water and cerebral spinal fluid", Moylan said, reading from Hayden's previous decision, according to The Sun. The hospital said noise from protesters outside the building on Sunday night had disturbed other young patients.
