British opposition leader queries May's decision to join military strike against Syria

Airstrike in Syria was the only alternative says British PM May

Russian Federation and Iran have condemned the attack but America's Vice President Mike Pence says this was the right action.

The chairman of the worldwide affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, said the strikes were a violation of worldwide law and probably created to prevent investigators from the global chemical weapons watchdog from doing their work.

These missile strikes were coordinated by the U.S., France and the U.K.in response to an alleged chemical attack by the Syrian government in Douma last week.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday (April 14) the British military had joined the United States and France in carrying out an attack on Syria to target its chemical weapons capability.

Here in Ireland, the Government is being called on not to get involved.

The bombings marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Assad and ally Russian Federation.

People Before Profit TD, Richard Boyd Barrett says what has happened in Syria is a "humanitarian crisis".

Mr Trump said the joint strikes against the Syrian regime were "perfectly executed". This legally questionable action risks escalating further, as USA defence secretary James Mattis has admitted, an already devastating conflict and therefore makes real accountability for war crimes and use of chemical weapons less, not more likely.

The White House pushed back against Macron's comments about Trump's intentions for USA forces.

Cable said May's decision "fatally undermines the integrity of the mission".

"We are determined to completely crush ISIS and create the conditions that will prevent its return." she said. "Russian Federation will demand a meeting of the UN Security Council, I think, for sure", Dzhabarov, who is the deputy head of Russia's foreign affairs committee, was quoted by RIA as saying.

But they backed action in Iraq the following year, and again in Syria in 2015, strictly limiting strikes to targets of the Islamic State group.

The inspectors were due to attempt to visit the Douma site. Downing Street spokesmen repeatedly declined to comment on that report.

But shadow attorney general Baroness Chakrabarti questioned the government's justification for the air strikes on Monday, telling BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "You can't use force under worldwide law just to punish Syria for bad behaviour".

She said: "In Douma, last Saturday a chemical weapons attack killed up to 75 people, including young children, in circumstances of pure horror".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the military action against Syria was legally questionable and makes real accountability for war crimes less likely.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said the US military had kept its strikes limited because it knew a wider attack would spark retaliation from Damascus and its allies and inflame the region.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", Trump insisted.

She said the strikes would "send a clear signal to anyone else who believes they can use chemical weapons with impunity".

"Further UK military intervention in Syria's appalling multi-sided war risks escalating an already devastating conflict", he said.

"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy, military reactions a substitute for a peace plan".
