British TV commentator sues Facebook over 'scam' ads

Enough is enough’ MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis on ITV’s This Morning says he never appears in online adverts

Martin Lewis, the journalist behind the 'Money Saving Expert' website, is taking social media giant Facebook to court claiming defamation over persistent fake adverts using his face and website to hawk dubious financial products.

Martin Lewis, is seeking exemplary damages in the United Kingdom high court, arguing that Facebook failed to prevent or swiftly remove false advertising that has both tarnished his reputation and lured unwitting victims into costly scams.

Facebook simply stated that it does not allow false ads on its platform and that it has told Lewis to report such ads, which it will then remove.

"What is particularly pernicious about Facebook is that it says the onus is on me, so I have spent time and effort and stress repeatedly to have them taken down", he said.

He echoed complaints made by British consumer campaigner Martin Lewis who today launched High Court proceedings in the United Kingdom in a bid to sue Facebook for defamation. The adverts are often scams and many... One of the most notable examples includes a lady who had over £100,000 taken from her.

"I don't do adverts".

Martin Lewis has previously criticised the "disgusting" use of his name and image as part of scams to trap unsuspecting investors.

Aside from the vilification, he pointed out how alarming it is that the fake ads are out there and more people may be falling victim to the con adverts. "Any ad with my picture or name in is without my permission", he said.

"The biggest problem I've got is some of these people think I've scammed them, so they won't even talk to me to let me help them", he told the publication.

"This shouldn't be hard - after all, it is a leader in face and text recognition". "This isn't a post in a forum, they are being paid and these adverts are pushed out to millions of people".

Natasha Lomas, a senior report for TechCrunch, confirmed that Facebook's ad guidelines do prohibit advertisements that contain "deceptive, false, or misleading content, including deceptive claims, offers, or business practices" and they also specifically prohibit cryptocurrency-related ads. Lewis says the action is created to get Facebook to change its advertising policy and introduce settings where well-known figures are asked for approval when their name is used in an advert.

"It is facilitating scams on a constant basis in a morally repugnant way", Lewis said.

Lewis has issued High Court proceedings against Facebook and is working with Seddons media lawyer Mark Lewis on the case. "It needs to be shown that the price of causing misery is very high".

"Other companies such as Outbrain who have run these adverts have taken them down".
