Health officials probe E. coli outbreak in 7 states

The Connecticut Department of Publich Health released a statement after the CDC announced they are investigating a multi-state E.Coli outbreak. Despite the fact that 7 U.S. states have been affected by E. Coli, so far, only New Jersey seems to concentrate most of the cases with 6 confirmed E. Coil infections. According to the CDC, the illnesses started surfacing between March 22 and March 31. An additional four have been reported in Idaho, and two cases each in CT and Pennsylvania.

"Some people may not be included in CDC's case count because no bacterial isolates are available for the DNA fingerprinting needed to link them to the outbreak".

Most individuals infected with E. Coli usually get better within a week, but about 5 to 10 percent of people diagnosed with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection are said to develop the potential life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome.

The CDC is not recommending that consumers avoid any particular food at this time.

Six people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported, as officials seek to determine what caused the outbreak.

Also, the CDC's experts are working on collecting samples from the affected patient to discover if the same bacteria strain is involved, trying to depict which was the source of this E. Coli widespread in the US. Restaurants and retailers are not now advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food.

The outbreak began in late March.

Some methods for reducing the risk of infection include thoroughly washing hands after using the bathroom or before cooking and eating, fully cooking meats to kill germs, and avoiding unpasteurized products like raw milk. Steaks and roasts should be cooked to at least 145˚F and let rest for 3 minutes after you remove meat from the grill or stove.

Wash fruits and vegetables before eating, unless the package says the contents have been washed.
