'Make in India': iPhone 6s production to begin in few weeks; will witness lower prices

Apple was already manufacturing the iPhone SE in the country.

(G.N.S) DT.14 Apple has started the trial production of the iPhone 6s Plus at the Bengaluru plant of its contract manufacturer, Wistron.

Do you think the local production of the iPhone 6s Plus will enable Apple to grow larger in the future?

Earlier this month, the government imposed a 10% custom duty on components like printed circuit boards populated with memory and chips, camera modules and connectors.

With local production, Apple is looking at a 5-7 per cent price decrease on the iPhone 6S, and consequently will comfortably place it in the range of OnePlus and Samsung's premium mid-range devices, sources revealed to the Economic Times. The iPhone 6s Plus, like all other expensive iPhones, saw a considerable rise in the prices. However, considering that not all parts of the smartphone will be manufactured in India, and will need to be imported from China, the price correction may not reflect immediately.

It's only when the local manufacturing plan "gains scale" will the buyers see a price correction. The phone was insulated from the recent price hike thanks to an increase in custom duty on smartphones from 15 per cent to 20 per cent in February. If Apple wants to cut down on additional cost, it will want to make parts and packaging within India as well. In total, there are five sourcing plants which includes Finland-based Salcomp's facility in Tamil Nadu and Chinabased Shenzhen YUTO Packaging Technology plant in Bengaluru.

A customer tries out an iPhone 6s Plus and an iPhone 6s at an Apple Store. The move has been taken in order to bring down the price of the three-year-old iPhone. However, the iPhone SE remained unaffected as it was manufactured in India since a year ago. The information has been passed on by industry insiders, who say that the iPhone 6s Plus has got a new assembly line at Wistron's facility alongside the iPhone SE.
