A spokesperson for Meijer tells 7 Action News that last week, they pulled all romaine lettuce off the shelves, including whole heads and chopped packaged romaine. More than 40 people have gone to the hospital, including nine with HUS-however, no deaths have been reported. Most people get better within 5-7 days.

CDC information collected to date indicates that romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Ariz., growing region could be contaminated, but the investigation has not identified a common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine lettuce. Work continues at the federal and state level to determine why this strain has a higher percentage of hospitalizations.

The CDC confirmed to Newsweek that this outbreak is the worst multi-state E. coli outbreak in the US since 2006, when almost 200 people got sick from contaminated spinach.

Cassell said the outbreak will be declared over when health officials are sure romaine lettuce from Yuma is no longer on the market. The CDC also expanded its warning to cover all types of romaine lettuce grown in Yuma. For more than a week now, Schnucks stores have only been selling romaine lettuce products from the Salinas, Calif., region, according to Schnucks spokesman Paul Simon. Consumers have been advised to throw away any store-bought romaine lettuce and to avoid buying more, or ordering it in a restaurant, unless they can confirm it was not sourced from the Yuma area. Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting, the agency said.

The CDC is now reporting 84 people in 19 states have been infected. No, said Ian Williams, chief of the CDC's Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch. Anyone with these symptoms should see a health provider immediately and report their infection to local departments of health and social services.

Health officials investigating the outbreak have obtained information on 78 of the sick patients and found that 42 of them have been hospitalized.
