The 20-year-old World junior record holder thereafter touched a season's best of 86.47m and became India's fourth individual gold victor in Commonwealth Games history in track and field. He had become the first Indian athlete to become a world champion in a field event when he clinched gold at the IAAF World U-20 Championships in Bydogszcz, Poland in 2016 after a record throw of 84.69m. In my desperation for that, I tried so hard that I tumbled over in my last two attempts.

Interestingly, Neeraj's worst throw was at 83.48m which was still higher than the best shot of silver medal victor Hamish Peacock from Australia, i.e. 82.59m. The young Chopra, who is coached by Garry Calvert, had qualified for the CWG after hurling a spear to a distance of 85.94m in his sixth attempt at the Federations Cup senior national athletics Championships in Patiala.

The field had been depleted after Olympics and world silver medallist Julius Yego of Kenya failed to qualify for final round, while 2012 Olympic champion and Rio Games bronze victor Keshorn Walcott opted out of the CWG. "You definitely get distracted by that", added Chopra.

"I've been totally relaxed here, I've enjoyed myself", said Chopra, flashing the smile that had a sun-soaked Gold Coast crowd eating out of his hand. This is India's 21st gold medal and overall tally goes up to 48 medals. "As for me, I was not under any pressure or nerves, I was well-prepared", he said.

Vikas Kashana, the other Indian in the fray, finished fifth with a best of 77.87m.

Arpinder Singh's dreams of a second bronze was dashed by Marcel Mayak of Cameroon, who came up with a personal best of 16.80m in the triple jump. The Jamaican team won the relay with a time of 3:24.00. Troy Doris of Guyana took gold (16.88m) and Gracia Yordonys of Dominica the silver (16.86).

Indian track and field athletes thus ended their Gold Coast CWG campaign with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, the same number and colour of medals as in the last Games in Glasgow in 2014.
