In a statement released on Thursday night, a Downing Street spokeswoman said: "The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump about Syria this evening".

"We have proof that last week. chemical weapons were used, at least with chlorine, and that they were used by the regime of Bashar al-Assad", Mr Macron said, without offering details of any evidence.

But Mattis said collecting evidence becomes more hard as time passes. He said "the Cold War is back - with a vengeance but with a difference", because safeguards that managed the risk of escalation in the past, "no longer seem to be present".

Moscow, he said, has "irrefutable information that it was another fabrication".

Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the military had "proof that testifies to the direct participation of Britain in the organising of this provocation in Eastern Ghouta". He didn't elaborate or name the state.

He also noted that the United States had not made any decision to launch military action in Syria. Syria's government denies responsibility.

Earlier in the week, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said there was no threat of the situation in Syria spiraling into U.S.

Britain has moved a step closer to potential military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad after Theresa May won the backing of senior ministers for action to deter any further use of chemical weapons by the regime. "It is to drive this to a UN-brokered peace but, at the same time, keep our foot on the neck of ISIS until we suffocate it", referring to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militant group.

In a public hearing on Thursday, Mattis told members of Congress that the U.S. is "not going to engage in the civil war itself", and it remains committed to the UN-backed negotiations in Geneva to end the war. It "could be very soon or not so soon at all", he said.

"I believe that there was a chemical attack and we're looking for the actual evidence", he said, calling the deaths "absolutely inexcusable".

The military action is not about intervening in Syria's civil war or changing its government, she said.

Syria said it had invited the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which has blamed the regime for previous attacks, to visit Douma. The Syrian government said it would facilitate the mission's investigation, which was to begin Saturday.

"If Russia had lived up to its commitments there would be no chemical weapons in Syria and we would not be here today".

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council Friday that "there is no military solution to the conflict". This is the leader of a global superpower speaking nonchalantly about launching a military strike that could kill soldiers from Syria and Russian Federation, another nuclear-armed country and staunch Syrian ally. More than 40 people died in the assault on the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday.

Trump met with his national security team on the situation in Syria later in the day and "no final decision has been made", the White House said in a statement.

Mr Hamadmad said that Assad could have been stopped several years ago if Britain, the USA and other allies intervened and expressed concern that no action will be taken.
