Scam targets tax preparers, tricks clients with fake returns

A tax extension gives you an additional six months to file your taxes. If you haven't filed yet, experts say you need to file for an extension.

Maagero added not to forget about the new tax system beginning next year, "This is the last year of the tax laws that were in effect for '17, ' so a lot the deductions and credits that were available to you, are going to be going away".

For those of you scrambling to complete your taxes last-minute, here's a bit of a reprieve: Taxes aren't due until Tuesday, April 17.

You can do that by filling out the IRS 4868 form.

Both the Rockingham County Sheriff's office and the Staunton Police Department said they have received complaints from people who are getting scam calls. Generating an accurate return may remain a top priority, but taking a moment to review it from the Internal Revenue Service's point of view before submitting could save you a significant headache down the road.

"The IRS will work with you", he said.

Paying off debt is another priority when it comes to planned uses of tax refunds. As of April 6, just more than 103 million had been filed.

"As long as you pay 100% of your 2016 tax liability - 110% for higher income taxpayers - you will not owe a penalty on your 2017 return", Jaeger said.

However, if you can't find a way to pay - file anyway.

If you are unsure how much you owe in taxes, here's some math to figure out what to pay now. If an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date that falls within the postponement period, residents should call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227. Some are income basic but it's only a little bit throughout the year, so I think it's good that everybody looks forward to that refund.
