Gmail.com redesign includes self-destructing emails

This is the new Gmail design

According to an email sent to G Suite administrators, Google has announced plans to reveal a newer look to Gmail for web as well as a slew of new features.

Google is working on a big redesign for Gmail on the web, it confirmed this week. Another feature to look forward to is smart replies which found its way to Google's Inbox and Allow last summer.

The design looked more like the mobile app meaning Gmail itself could be updated in a similar way.

A default view highlights attachments such as documents and photos, a comfortable view doesn't show attachments, and a compact view shows more messages.

Earlier today, Google emailed G Suite customers letting them know a new version of Gmail is on the way.

Taking up less than 5 MB‚ Google said the app is quick to download without using much data‚ and it takes up minimal space on your phone. The feature is already available on the mobile app and helps you reply to messages with AI selected short replies.

A new leak shows off the ability to add expiry dates to emails on the service, among other changes.

Overall the redesign looks clean and well refined. Now, when someone emails asking if you're free for a meeting on a certain day, you don't need to open a new tab to check your calendar. However, users will find new items like "Snoozed" and "Indef" as part of the upcoming snoozing feature that was first introduced with Inbox. Recipients will then receive an e-mail that requires them to click a link and input their Google credentials to view the e-mail.

According to the tipster who spilled the news to TechCrunch, there's already a help page for the feature but it's now not populated with any information - suggesting that the self-destructing emails of the new Gmail design is under development but not ready for release at this point in time. There also appears to be a self-destruct button of sorts, via a customizable expiration date that allows the user to send the email into the ether after a time period of the user's choosing-whether that's a week, month, or even a few years.

The expiring emails feature works similarly to the expiring emails feature in ProtonMail as the email becomes unreadable after some time.
