Head of Nobel literature prize panel quits over sex abuse scandal

Two members, including permanent secretary Sara Danius, resigned Thursday over a controversy that has divided the Academy into two camps. The scandal centers on allegations by 18 women that they had been subject to harassment and physical abuse by Jean-Claude Arnault, the French husband of Academy member Katarina Frostenson.

Arnault was banned in December by the Swedish Academy from attending a Nobel banquet after the Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter published allegations from 18 women claiming to have been assaulted or raped by him. They also started posting on social media using the hashtag #knytblusförsara.

This photo posted on the Instagram account of Alice Bah Kuhnke on Friday, April 13, 2018 shows the Swedish Culture minister posing for a photo in support for ousted head of the Swedish Academy. While announcing her resignation, Danius said she had lost the confidence of the academy, but did not comment on whether the academy voted to remove her, according to The Guardian. We can see that the trust in the Swedish Academy has been seriously damaged.

"It is the academy's wish that I leave my post as permanent secretary", said Danius, a 56-year-old Swedish literature historian, and the first woman to hold the position.

She cut all academy ties with him (Frostenson also stepped down from her role in the academy) and hired a law firm to investigate the relationship between the academy and the club. It seems Engdahl got his supporters - chiefly men - go against Danius and all those who supported her have now left the academy.

State prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into the sexual abuse accusations, but said in March that some parts of the probe had to be shelved because of a lack of evidence and the statute of limitations having expired for some of the incidents.

Hours after Danius' announcement, the Academy said Arnault's wife, Katarina Frostenson, had also chose to quit from her post on the board.

The Nobel Foundation Board sharply criticized the Swedish Academy on Wednesday, saying the group was threatening to tarnish the reputation of the Nobel Prize.

Sweden itself saw thousands of sexual misconduct allegations surfacing.
