A SC prison spokesman reported Monday morning that seven inmates are dead and 17 others were injured after a brawl broke out inside Lee Correctional Institution.

Logan said he just finished identifying all the dead Monday and is working to notify relatives.

One of South Carolina's most unsafe prisons has been secured after state police were called out to a disturbance.

The department of corrections says all law enforcement officers who responded to the prison are safe and accounted for.

South Carolina Department of Corrections did not immediately return a request for comment Monday morning.

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from at least seven jurisdictions lined up outside the prison to tend to the wounded.

Seven inmates were killed and 17 injured following an incident at Lee Correctional Sunday night. The local coroner's office also responded.

"Sunday's deadly incident came three weeks after inmates briefly held an officer hostage and took control of part of a dorm at the Bishopville prison", The State newspaper reports.
