Jaguar Land Rover to cut jobs and production – and to blame Brexit

Earlier in the year, JLR announced that it would cut production at its Halewood plant in Merseyside in light of Brexit uncertainty.

Many attribute the slump in sales to confusion over the Government's stance on diesel cars, the newspaper says, along with uncertainty over the effects of Brexit on the new vehicle market. The jobs will be lost from the Solihull and Castle Bromwich factory sites.

The jobs cuts are believed to have been triggered by a 26% decline in JLR's United Kingdom auto sales over the first three months of this year, The Guardian reports.

The company said in a statement that "continuing headwinds" have forced it to make "adjustments to production schedules and the number of agency staff".

It said it was continuing to recruit large numbers of engineers and apprentices and it remained committed to its United Kingdom plants.

"We also remain committed to our United Kingdom plants, in which we have invested more than £4 billion since 2010 to futureproof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models". There are 3,200 people employed at the Castle Bromwich site and a further 10,000 at Solihull. JLR revealed "temporary adjustments" to production schedules at the firm's Halewood plant.

Jaguar sales have fallen 26% so far this year and Land Rover dropped 20%. A source told the Reuters news agency that 1,000 roles would be cut.

"The demonization of diesel is now having very real consequences for the United Kingdom vehicle industry, which is key to Britain's growth".

'With JLR's United Kingdom production facilities exporting around 75 per cent of its vehicles and importing many parts from the European Union, this action is in part an effort to help mitigate potentially-costly tariffs, which could significantly damage its bottom line.
