De Lille received a hero's welcome as the DA federal executive met elsewhere in Cape Town to discuss her future.

De Lille was a guest speaker at an EFF rally, paying tribute to the veteran struggle icon who passed away last Monday in Johannesburg following an illness at the age of 81. "Rest In Peace Mama Winnie".

De Lille is facing renewed pressure from her party after it adopted a recall clause which has since been dubbed the "De Lille clause"‚ which allows the DA to recall its elected public representatives from office.

While the DA wants to boot her out of her job, it says it's untrue that it's charged her with speaking at the memorial event without informing the party, although it says it expected her to do so as a courtesy.

Selfe conceded the party's current impasse with De Lille over her future as Cape Town mayor may have played a role in how the issue was communicated.

When contacted following her address‚ De Lille declined to comment specifically on Selfe's comments. Earlier when her troubles started‚ many linked her to the party but she downplayed the suggestions at the time‚ saying she was only concerned about clearing her name.

The storm around Mayor Patricia De Lille's attendance at an EFF memorial service for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on Wednesday has thrown open the debate on whether she plans to join a new political party. "Speak to her directly".

Addressing the crowd at the memorial‚ De Lille spoke fondly about Madikizela-Mandela and their relationship.

The party refused to be drawn into mud-slinging as they are still mourning the death of Madikizela-Mandela. "But I want to assure Capetonians that I didn't take any money from the City of Cape Town", De Lille said this morning. "People would love to know about Winnie", she said.

"Mama believed that the politics of our people has no political party", she said.
