United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres has condemned the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district and has expressed hope of perpetrators being punished.

"Taking into consideration the situation and the general perception, the two ministers in consultation with party leaders chose to resign from their posts, " said BJP's national general secretary Ram Madhav after chairing a meeting of the party leaders in Jammu.

"Yes, there has been indiscretion and it is for this that they made a decision to step down", he told reporters after the BJP legislature party meeting. "Abdul Gani Kohli (minister) was sent to the house of the victim, so that an ugly situation was not created", PTI quoted Lal as saying.

"We thank people of entire country including the intelligentsia and civil society for standing with the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the case". The state government earlier said in the Assembly that 1,510 acres of land had encroached in the city.

The attack took place in January, but the details were only released by police this week. These two ministers had gone to pacify the people, but subsequently their presence was mistaken for trying to shield the accused. They did the right thing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while breaking his silence on Kathua and Unnao rape cases said on Friday the victims would definitely get justice.

He claimed that the people in Kathua suspected that the inquiry would not be impartial and demanded a CBI probe.

Members of the nomadic Muslim Bakerwal community on Saturday staged a protest in Srinagar demanding the shifting of trial in Kathua rape and murder case outside Jammu.

The crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police has submitted a chargesheet in the case against eight accused, including two special police officers and a sub-inspector and a head constable for destroying evidence.

The body of the girl was found in Rasana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses in the forest area.
