There were at least 44 school districts that closed because teachers called in sick to attend the rally.

In the video, Bevin thanks people who "understood what I was saying", but admitted that a "tremendous number of people did not fully appreciate" his comments. Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin released a video Sunday apologizing for his comments to reporters Friday suggesting that Kentucky children were sexually assaulted or poisoned because of teacher protests.

'And so the extent that I do that well, great.

And after watching the video Sunday, she said, "Seriously?" That's not much of an apology.

"I grew up surrounded by an appreciation that this is not an easy task", he said of teaching. It was still him defending his words. I don't know how we can misunderstand his intent. "If anyone asks me for my advice, I would say that they should come out and make a statement, either clarifying it or being apologetic and getting the statement behind them".

House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, said in a statement that while Bevin claims there was a misunderstanding, "the people of Kentucky heard loud and clear what he said and today's video shows he still does not comprehend why so many were understandably upset".

"His insults of teachers over the a year ago have been beneath the decorum of any respectable elected official", Nishimuta wrote in a statement.
