2018 NHL First-Round Playoff Preview: Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals

Artemi Panarin scored a handsome goal 6:02 into overtime to give the Blue Jackets a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night in the first-round playoff series.

After Seth Jones scored on a power play late in the third period to send the game to overtime, Panarin scored the game-winner by completing an incredible rush where he blew past Dmitry Orlov and then casually roofed a shot under the crossbar, beating Capitals goalie Phillip Grubauer from a sharp angle. The Blue Jackets team the Capitals will face in Round 1 is a much different team than the one that lost the first three games of the season series.

But Columbus cut the lead to 2-1 at 4:48 of the second period when Alexander Wennberg redirected a cross-crease pass from Boone Jenner past Grubauer.

The Capitals entered the third period with a 2-1 lead, only to let the game become tied 1:31 seconds in.

If you didn't know any better, it sure seemed as though the Washington Capitals were well on their way to a relatively easy Game 1 win in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

Devante Smith-Pelly gave Washington a 3-2 lead at 5:12 of the period.

BOSTON - Brad Marchand, David Backes and David Krejci each scored a power-play goal, and Tuukka Rask stopped 26 shots in Boston's Game 1 victory over Toronto. Adding Ian Cole at the deadline gave an already deep blueline a veteran with Stanley Cup rings, a nice addition to a roster that's otherwise bereft of playoff success.

Kane broke a scoreless deadlock at the 7:07 mark of the second period at Honda Center.

Wilson, 24, scored a career-high 14 goals and 35 points this season playing mostly on the top line with Alex Ovechkin.

Alex Ovechkin rebounded from last season's 33-goal effort to lead the National Hockey League with 49.

Palat notched his second career postseason game with three points and first since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the New York Rangers in 2015. Craig Smith and Colton Sissons scored a goal apiece, and Ryan Johansen had two assists.

Elsewhere, Czech David Pastrnak tallied a goal and two assists as the Boston Bruins swamped the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 in their series opener at the Boston Garden.

Game two goes Saturday at the Garden before the series switches to Air Canada Centre on Monday. With AP Photos.Artemi Panarin scored 6:02 into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Elsewhere, forwards T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson and Lars Eller bring heavy games to the table - ideal for the playoffs.

The news might get worse for the Stanley Cup drought-weary Leafs as forward Nazem Kadri is facing a likely suspension for a unsafe hit on Bruins Tommy Wingels which sent Wingels face first into the side boards.

Grubauer, who stepped in when Holtby was given a "reset" after slumping in February and March, finished with a.923 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against average.

Colton Sissons sealed the outcome with an empty-netter at 18:03 as the Predators notched their 11th straight win over the Avalanche, dating to April 2016.
