Syria's civil war, which began as a popular uprising against Assad, is now in its eighth year.

Lower prices for oil, Russia's main export, also weighed on Russian assets.

In response, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a Facebook post that "smart missiles should fly towards terrorists, not towards the lawful government". Moscow has denied any wrongdoing.

On Thursday, Russia's military said Douma has been brought under full control of the Syrian government under a Russia-mediated deal that secured the evacuation of the rebels and thousands of civilians after it was recaptured by Syrian forces.

The US has some 2,000 troops in eastern Syria, mainly supporting the fight against the Islamic State group.

Haley declined to say how the US would respond if Syria uses conventional weapons. While some investors are pointing to rising oil prices as a reason to buy assets of the world's biggest energy producer, others warn that Russia's deteriorating relations with the West create too much uncertainty about how far USA penalties will go.

The White House said that despite events in Syria and the poisoning of a spy on British soil, Trump still wanted to sit down with Putin.

"Everyone is going to feel it at this point", she said.

But in a later press conference, Defense Secretary James Mattis called the strikes "a one-time shot", although he suggested that if the regime uses chemical weapons again that could provoke another Allied assault.

OPCW inspectors were visiting sites in Douma on Monday aiming to collect samples, interview witnesses and document evidence to determine whether banned toxic munitions were used.

President Donald Trump and some of his top cabinet aides have battled over the administration's policy toward President Vladimir Putin and Russian Federation.

Zasypkin also said that any hostilities with Washington should be avoided and Moscow was ready for negotiations.

The Kremlin took no military action in 2017 when the USA conducted similar airstrikes on a Syrian airbase... but Russian observers say that could easily change.

"Russia's position was taken into account", said Elena Suponina, a Middle East specialist at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies.

"The current escalation of the situation around Syria is destructive for the entire system of global relations", Putin said in a statement read by Russia's United Nations ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, at an emergency Security Council session called by Russian Federation on Saturday.

"With yesterday's military action, our message was crystal clear".

Russian social media buzzed Saturday with angry nationalist comments blasting Putin for failing to protect his ally. "If there is a strike by the Americans, then ... the missiles will be downed and even the sources from which the missiles were fired", he said in Arabic.

Putin has spoken by phone with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and they agreed the Western airstrikes were an "illegal action. adversely impacting prospects for political settlement in Syria", a Kremlin statement said.

Russian Federation on Saturday called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as Moscow said it would consider supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria following US-led strikes.

But British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was little doubt the Syrian government used a barrel bomb - large containers packed with fuel, explosives and scraps of metal - to deliver the chemicals at Douma. A US Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean.

Piazza said further, limited airstrikes are possible in Syria.

Aviation regulators have been stepping up monitoring of conflict zones since Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was downed by a surface-to-air missile over Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 people on board.

Disputing the Russian military's contention that Syrian air defense units downed 71 allied missiles, McKenzie said no USA or allies missiles were stopped. But diplomats foresaw no decisions on Monday, especially against Russians.
