The United Nations Secretary-General, meanwhile, said he is closely watching reports related to the airstrikes on Syria conducted by three of its permanent members.

In a "combined operation" on Friday night, the UK, US and France launched airstrikes in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack that left up to 75 dead in Douma last week. The Syrian government and Russian Federation called this information untrue, while the USA and allies have blamed Bashar al-Assad for the attack. Trump condemned the attack calling it the work of a "monster".

Despite Putin's condemnation, the United Nations Security Council just voted to reject Russia's resolution condemning "aggression" against Syria by the U.S. and its allies.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation chief Jens Stoltenberg says Russia's obstruction course at the U.N. Security Council left NATO's U.S, British and French allies no option but to launch a missile attack on key Syrian installations.

He added, "But since this was blocked by Russian Federation, there was no other alternative".

In separate calls, the Prime Minister spoke to the USA and French presidents to discuss the offensive.

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad", Trump said in a televised address from the White House.

It demanded that military action stop "immediately and without delay".

The statement, carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, said the strikes were prompted by the "Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians, including women and children".

He said: 'Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace.
