An unidentified 11-year-old girl's body was found with 86 external injuries, including some on her private parts media reported on Sunday. According to Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma, now the police would widen investigation in other States also. There is indeed a possibility that the girl may have been raped, tortured and killed elsewhere.

After five-hour long postmortem, it was revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for at least eight days. Her death was caused due to the fatal blows incurred on several parts of the body.

The Police Commissioner appealed to people to come forward and help the police establish the identity of the girl.

According to the police, the body was found in Bhestan locality in Pandesara area after some passersby spotted it lying in bushes near a cricket ground on the morning of April 6.

As there are no signs of struggle available at the site from where the body was recovered, police believe that she could have been killed somewhere else and then dumped at the place. Barring this incident, there were also reports of incidents of rape in Noida, Patna and Balasore, highlighting the fact that India needs to step ahead with death sentence against rapists.

"Going by the nature of the injuries, they seem to be caused in the period ranging from one week to one day prior to the recovery of the body, suggesting that the girl might have been held captive, tortured and possibly raped", news agency PTI quoted Dr. Govekar as saying. "We have taken a DNA sample for identification". A reward of Rs 20,000 has been announced for anyone providing information about the girl or her family.

The police have registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Another case that has attracted huge attention is the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao where a BJP MLA is the main accused.

The Surat Police is facing stiff criticism from all corners of the society for their inability to find the identity of the girl and nab the offenders.
