Premier League clubs make decision on VAR

English Premier League rejects VAR next season

Whether you like or loathe VAR, Premier League clubs can not have any "buyer's remorse" on this one.

A shareholders meeting was held today in London were all 20 Premier League clubs agreed that more testing is required before the system can be introduced.

There have been a string of controversial VAR incidents so far this season, leading to suggestions that there must be improvements on how quickly decisions are mad, crowd interaction with such decisions and more clarity over why decisions are made.

The Premier League clubs have called for further testing of VAR's viability in the domestic cup competitions in 2018-19 while also approving the expansion of "non-live" trials.

The decision to vote against the video technology was due to some notable high-profile problems with the new technology when it was used for matches in this season's FA Cup.

"The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football and key learning from the many competitions elsewhere using it".

They will carry on the experiment next season with more VAR games in cup competitions and the possibility of it being used in the Premier League as a trial run with the results not being used.

The Clubs recognized and are grateful for the substantial developments made by PGMOL Managing Director Mike Riley and his team.

Manchester City's manager claimed his own side had been in favour of video assistant referees being used in the top flight next season but that arch-rivals United and soon-to-be-deposed champions Chelsea were against it.

VAR will be used in Russian Federation at this year's World Cup and has also been approved for use next season by most of Europe's major leagues, including Spain's La Liga, the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A.
