The US and its allies, Nebenzia alleged, are setting the stage to "unleash a military scenario against Syria". The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

The Russian statements were forcefully rejected by the United States, with President Donald Trump telling the Russians that missles were on the way.

Any US strike is likely to involve the navy, given the risk to aircraft from Russian and Syrian air defence systems.

The UN Security Council is to meet again on Friday, at Russia's request, to try to defuse the standoff, as United States President Donald Trump appeared to back away from imminent action, days after warning Russian Federation to "get ready" for missile strikes.

The Pentagon said the strikes targeted a research centre in Damascus and a chemical weapons storage facility and command post west of Homs.

As global chemical weapons experts travelled to Syria to investigate a suspected gas attack by government forces which killed dozens of people, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Russia's Vladimir Putin and expressed concern about a worsening situation. Russian officials denied any involvement during the most violent days of the fighting between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine in 2014, while journalists and Western intelligence agencies reported tanks pouring across the Russian border into the Ukraine.

Witnesses and Western governments say helicopters dropped chemical bombs that killed many children and women hiding in cellars from bombardment.

Britain and the United States said they issued the new alert to help targets protect themselves and persuade victims to share information with government investigators so they can better understand the threat.

The White Helmets, a civil defense agency, blamed the Assad regime for the alleged chemical attack, which it said killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others. "If Russia had lived up to its commitment, there would be no chemical weapons in Syria, and we would not be here today".

"No CW traces, no victims to be found anywhere, but plenty of empty words and accusations", said Zakharova.

Russian Federation blames insurgents for the chemical attacks, accusing western allies of using these atrocities as an excuse for #Military Intervention.

"A fake "chemical weapons massacre" was a last attempt to stage a provocation for the benefit of extremists and their foreign backers", the embassy tweeted.

Vassily Nebenzia, Moscow's U.N. ambassador said he "cannot exclude" war between the United States and Russian Federation. According to a BBC report, he added, "the immediate priority is to avert war".

Trump was reacting to a warning from Russian Federation that any United States missiles fired at Syria over the deadly assault on a rebel enclave would be shot down and the launch sites targeted.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", he said.

UN Syria peace envoy Staffan de Mistura cited the air base strike along with other recent events in Syria in a briefing to the Security Council, cautioning against a "situation of uncontrollable escalation".
