Strikes on Syria will carry consequences, warns Russian envoy

"Not one of the cruise missiles released by the U.S. and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said in a statement carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency, referring to the locations of Russia's naval facility in Tartus and its Hmeimim air base.

Russian Federation has vowed that an attack on Syria would not go unanswered, issuing several statements to that effect in the days before tonight's bombing.

None of the missiles fired by the United States and its allies were routed through the Russian air defense zone in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Saturday, after multinational forces hammered select targets in Syria.

The Russian defence ministry and the Kremlin have yet to make any comment on the strikes announced by US President Donald Trump.

Ambassador Anatoly Antonov's statement promised that tonight's bombardment would not go unaswered. Our warnings have been left unheard. "Again, we are being threatened".

Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the U.S. and its allies. "All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris".

Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible.

Moscow on Saturday strongly criticized the joint the USA, United Kingdom and France airstrikes targeting the Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons in Syria.
