Team Scotland added that Hawkins will remain in Gold Coast University Hospital overnight as a precaution and will be assessed again in the morning by their medical team.

"After Callum Hawkins collapsed on the bridge, medical staff provided treatment when requested".

According to a report, an official informed the spectators to leave Hawkins unattended.

Organisers said there are strict rules that can see athletes disqualified for seeking medical help.

Staggeringly, Hawkins had to wait several minutes before receiving medical attention, forcing organisers to defend their protocols.

Whilst Callum's recovery is our clear priority, we are still reviewing the circumstances of today's race with GOLDOC and the CGF to ensure the continued health and well-being of all athletes remains paramount.

And while commentating on the BBC, former middle distance runner Steve Cram said it was "a disgrace" that it took so long for any paramedics to attend to the stricken runner.

He said: "I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's Marathon", he said.

Hawkins had showed gradual signs of deterioration in the five to 10 minutes before he collapsed for good.

According to GOLDOC, medical staff were posted at 500m intervals in the final kilometres of the course, and were equipped with radio communications. "The response of medical staff this morning was inside agreed response suggestions and timeframes", talked about the assertion.

'I was also concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images, ' he said. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of Gold Coast 2018".

"I'm absolutely delighted to get the bronze medal but I'm disappointed Callum couldn't make it to the end because he was going so well and I really felt bad passing him lying on the ground", said the 26-year-old. Seven of the 24 starters did not complete the race, with Tanzania's Stephano Huche Gwandu put in a wheelchair after falling as he crossed the line.

Viewers took to Twitter to voice their dismay at the way the athlete was treated with one user calling the scenes "distressing", writing: "No medics for ages and the woman just taking pics of him in a heap on the floor, not even trying to help him just taking photos, so shocking!" "When I was coming down the home straight I tried to accelerate, but I was just gone".

Australian victor Michael Shelley ran past the prone Hawkins just as help arrived. But at the same time I wasn't feeling that great myself and thinking I need to get to the line before the same thing happens to me and hold on to a medal.

Helalia Johannes won the women's race in 2:32.40, becoming Namibia's first female gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games.
