Unnao rape case: Police lodges FIR against BJP MLA

His lawyer, Satyendra Singh did not oppose the CBI's application, saying, "We are willing to cooperate with the CBI in the investigation".

With possibility of arrest of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tonight submitted it's interim probe report to the Uttar Pradesh government.

The CBI on Saturday also took into custody Shashi Singh, the woman who allegedly took the victim to the MLA on the day of the crime in June previous year.

The victim has alleged that the MLA, his brother and their some other supporters had gang-raped her after she had approached the lawmaker for a job. Sengar was arrested last night after an uproar across the country over the "inaction" by the Uttar Pradesh Police in the case.

He however rued the fact that his initial demand for a CBI probe was stonewalled by the state and regretted that had this probe been ordered earlier, his brother would have been alive.

CBI has lodged three cases till date into the matter and had interrogated main accused BJP MLA Sengar for 16 hours yesterday following his medical examinations.

Additional chief judicial magistrate of the CBI court Sunil Kumar also approved judicial remand of the accused from April 21 until April 28.

"Happy that CBI confirmed his arrest". The court thus struck down the Advocate General's submission that the state government had transferred only the three recent cases, including assault and murder of the victim's father, to the CBI, "leaving (out) the first FIR (of rape) of 2017".

He also said before the court that he has "faith in the judiciary", as reported by news agency ANI.

The CM's comments came five days after the victim tried to immolate herself in front of the CM's residence demanding justice.

After the high court's slamming, Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened in the matter and ordered the CBI to take up the case and seriously investigate it. Sources said then Unnao Superintendent of Police Neha Pandey and the incumbent district police chief Pushpanjali might also be questioned. Her father died in judicial custody the next day, nearly a week after he was reportedly thrashed by the MLA's brother and others.
