During negotiations, agreement was reached on holding a meeting of leaders of the two countries.

The April 27 summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - the third-ever meeting of leaders from the two Koreas - may see the pair release a joint statement saying that they will seek to ease military tensions and to end confrontation, according to the official.

The peninsula remains bisected in a perpetual stalemate, with the USA -backed South Korean military lined up against more than a million North Korean troops.

Asked about the report, a foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing said: "We are willing to maintain and strengthen high-level exchanges with the DPRK (North Korea), deepen strategic communication and expand exchanges and cooperation to benefit the people of both countries".

Seoul has said the peace treaty should be signed by the two Koreas, guaranteed by the United States and China with support from Russian Federation and Japan, and later approved by the UN. Meeting Kim Jong-UN and Donald trump is expected to take place in may or June of this year.

Seoul's unification minister has said the two leaders' agenda will cover three main areas: denuclearisation, establishing a permanent peace and improving inter-Korean relations.

The South's presidential Blue House said on Tuesday that Seoul might send special envoys to North Korea if necessary to ensure the success of the highly anticipated summit.

In what would amount to a stunning development, North and South Korea are in discussions to announce at next week's leaders' summit an official end to the military conflict between the two neighbors, which remain technically at war, the South's Munhwa Ilbo daily reported Monday, citing an unidentified "key" South Korean official. The North also had expressed readiness to hold a similar event with the President of the United States.

Im revealed that a direct phone link between Moon and Kim will likely be set up on Friday.
