The Pentagon said one of the targets was a scientific research center located in the greater Damascus area, which it described as a Syrian center for the research, development, production and testing of chemical and biological weaponry. No casualties have been reported.

The second target was a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs believed to be the primary storage location of sarin gas in the country.

All three allies fired 22 weapons at the Him Shinshar Chemical Weapons Storage Site just west of Homs, and the US military launched seven missiles at the Him Shinshar Chemical Weapons Bunker, McKenzie said.

Pape, an air strike expert, wrote "Bombing to Win" which is required reading in the U.S. Air Force. "Last night's operations were very successful".

The officials were asked on what grounds the Pentagon determined the Assad administration used chemical weapons. The use of which, she says, "is inexcusable" and "illegal".

Reading a statement on Syrian TV, Brig. The attack reportedly occurred in the Ghouta region and killed dozens, including women and children.

Like thousands of others in the town, the medical student, Mohammed, has now been evacuated north to areas under rebel control as the government retakes the eastern Ghouta suburbs. Pictures from opposition supporters circulated on social media showing lifeless bodies piled in basements. He added that the strikes had not completely toppled Syria's chemical weapons system, but that it had been "dealt a severe blow".

The strikes have become the latest, and potentially most unsafe, flashpoint between the USA and Russian Federation, whose relations have appeared to deteriorate significantly in recent weeks, and have raised the specter of a proxy battle - or even outright conflict - between the two nuclear powers.

As of Saturday, neither Syria nor its Russian or Iranian allies retaliated, US officials said, though Assad has denied that he used chemical weapons in the April 7 attack in Douma that killed as many as 70 people and injured 1,000 others.

While the Pentagon said the strikes wouldn't continue beyond Friday night, Trump warned that they could be repeated if Assad persisted with chemical attacks. "But we were very confident about the decision we've made".

The missile strikes have drawn the ire of chief Syrian government allies, Russian Federation and Iran.

In 2013, he said, "we should stay the hell out of Syria" and "Let the Arab League take care of Syria". Syrians were also shown gathering in central squares in Aleppo waving Syrian flags and saying that they would never kneel to foreign enemies. It also appeared created to sidestep Russian forces in Syria.

Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the director of the Joint Staff, said the USA targeted the Barzah research center after officials "assessed that there probably some chemical or nerve agents in that target".

The U.S. has denied that assertion and called the group's mission "essential" to a complete understanding of what chemical agents were used.

The US, Britain and France launched airstrikes against multiple places in Syria early Saturday following US President Donald Trump's order despite global warnings against further escalation of the situation in the Arab country and across the Middle East. "I commend President Trump for leading the multinational effort to make sure that Assad realizes the consequences of such acts".

Russian diplomat Vassily Nebenzia was the first to speak at the meeting at the U.N.'s headquarters in New York City and deemed the strike "hooliganism".

Eight countries voting against, and four countries abstained - Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Peru and Equitorial Guinea.

The UN Security Council met to debate the strikes but rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of the "aggression" by the three Western allies.

That sends a clear message, according the Syrian representative to the United Nations, that there is no interest in a "transparent investigation".

"If the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded", US Ambassador Nikki Haley said.
