Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said no additional strikes were planned unless Assad again uses chemical weapons. Gen. Ali Mayhoub said three civilians were wounded in one of the USA -led strikes on a military base in Homs, although the attack was aborted by derailing the incoming missile.

Mr Trump's language was more brutal: "They are crimes of a monster".

Senator Molan said there was "absolutely no reason and no justification for Australia to participate" in any future air strikes of the kind threatened by Mr Trump on Saturday.

Associated Press reporters saw smoke rising from east Damascus and what appeared to be a fire light up the sky.

After the strikes, Moscow's ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, said: "We warned that such actions would not be left without consequences". Barzah is the location of a major Syrian scientific research center. Those bases come under the protection of Russian air defense units.

Syrian soldier wave weapons and national flags as they chant slogans against U.S. President Trump during demonstrations following a wave of U.S., British and French military strikes to punish President Bashar Assad for suspected chemical attack against civilians, in Damascus, Syria, Saturday, April 14, 2018. A third target, also near Homs, contained both a chemical weapons equipment storage facility and a command post. Evidence that the nerve agent sarin also was used is inconclusive, he said.

France's foreign minister said the "chemical escalation" in Syria is not acceptable because it's violating the rules of war and of humanity.

Trump said Washington is prepared to "sustain" pressure on Assad until he ends what the president called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons. It was a marked escalation in force compared to a U.S. strike launched a year ago, when only cruise missiles were used against a single airfield.

The foreign ministry early Saturday said the strikes aimed to block a probe by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, a global watchdog.

The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported the military action.

While insisting that the military action was a direct effect of the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, May also alluded to the use of a nerve agent in the English city of Salisbury.

The arguments over what happened in Douma on April 7 and who was responsible have dragged US-Russian relations to their lowest ebb in decades.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British armed forces "to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability".

British Prime Minister Theresa May described the attack as neither "about intervening in a civil war" nor "about regime change" but a limited and targeted strike that "does not further escalate tensions in the region" and does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties.

Macron said: "We can not tolerate the employment of chemical weapons".

And he set his own precedent just over a year ago when he ordered a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base after sarin was sacked at civilians in the town of Khan Sheikhun.

At the time, the Pentagon said that a fifth of Syria's operational aircraft were either damaged or destroyed. "Syria continues to engage in and provide a base for murderous actions, including those of Iran, that put its territory, its forces and its leadership at risk", the official said.

The Russian military had vowed to respond to any attack, and Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration had repeatedly warned that Trump was taking America down a risky path.

"If it is finished, and there is no second round, it will be considered limited", the official told Reuters.
