A senior police officer privy to Nirmala Devi's questioning said she admitted that the voice in the audio clip was hers. While she did not mention what the girls were required to do Nirmala Devi said, "Being college girls you would have grasped what those "certain things" are".

After the allegations, the local police literally broke into the house and arrested her in the evening on Monday.

The parents of the students of the college are now looking up to the Department of Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu to step in and conduct a thorough inquiry to find out the culprits at the management level at the Madurai Kamaraj University.

The college, which was informed about the matter almost a month ago by the students, approached the police yesterday only after an audio clip of the teacher's conversation with students was widely shared on social media. "Citing that part, she has said she wouldn't have made the suggestion if she wanted students to perform sexual favours", he said. She was also booked under the Information Technology Act. In the audio clipping, Nirmala Devi could be heard advising her pupils, over phone, about the opportunity awaiting them. "/ to yield to "sexual favours" of higher ranking authorities of the state-owned Madurai Kamaraj University". When the girls tell her not to talk about this again, Ms. Nirmala Devi seeks an assurance from them that they will not reveal about the conversation to anyone.

It is said that the police had to storm their way in as the accused Nirmala Devi locked herself up after police came about to arrest her.

The university vice chancellor PP Chelladurai denied any connection to the varsity officials on the issue.

Nirmala Rani, advocate and member of AIDWA who led a protest in the college opposed multiple enquiries ordered by Governor, the university and the college as it would only lead to secondary victimisation of the poor girl students who firmly said no to the offer made by her teacher.

"Dating takes social courage and we need to teach our young people the virtue of social courage", Cronin said in a statement.

DMK chief MK Stalin sought a CBI probe into the matter.
