Former First Lady Barbara Bush Is In Failing Health and Will Seek 'Comfort Care'

Former first lady Barbara Bush is in failing health and will not seek additional medical care after a series of recent hospitalizations, a spokesman for the Bush family said Sunday.

Mrs. Bush, 92, has been hospitalized several times in Houston, Texas, over the past year to be treated for chronic pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, her family has said.

Former first lady Barbara Bush, the wife and mother of two presidents, has made a decision to end medical treatment for a life-threatening illness.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself - thanks to her abiding faith, but for others", the statement reads. "Focusing on the family is the best place to start to make this country more literate, and I still feel that being more literate will help us solve so numerous other problems facing our society", she wrote in her 1994 memoir.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy began during her White House years, with a goal to improve the lives of disadvantaged Americans by boosting literacy among parents and their children.

Both husband and wife have dealt with deteriorating health in recent years.

She married George HW Bush in 1945.

In the statement, it was not written how critical her condition is at present. She was also hospitalized after experiencing fatigue and coughing.

The couple met at a Christmas dance in 1941, when Barbara Pierce was 16 and George Bush was 17.

"I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe", she told the magazine.

"One out of six Americans, literally, can not read above the fifth grade level - that's awful!", said Barbara when she made literacy her focal point while serving as First Lady of the United States.

Granddaughter Jenna Bush Hager posted a photo to Instagram earlier this week showing the four generations of Bush women.
