Tiger Woods officially enters 2018 US Open; on track for NJ appearance in August

Woods, a three-time U.S. Open champion, is amidst a comeback after nearly a year away from golf due to injury and then a fourth back surgery.

The 14-time major victor has played in two previous U.S. Open tournaments at the iconic venue, withdrawing in 1995 as an amateur and finishing 17th in 2004. The USGA confirmed Thursday that Woods is in the field for the upcoming tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, which will give the 42-year-old another chance at winning his 15th major.

In two previous appearances at Shinnecock, Woods (as an amateur) withdrew from the 1995 event with a sore neck, and finished T-17 in 2004.

Woods has made an encouraging return to the PGA Tour this year after completing his recovery from spinal fusion surgery, and played in the Masters last week for the first time since 2015.

Woods' appearance in Southampton, N.Y., will mark his first showing at the U.S. Open in three years.

Woods hasn't played the U.S. Open since he missed the cut at Chambers Bay with rounds of 80-76.

Tiger Woods will look to snap his major drought at the 2018 U.S. Open after falling short in the Masters this month. Nine years later, he shot 10 over par and tied for 17th. It was at Torrey Pines in 2008 that Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in 19 playoff holes for that last major title to date.
