Operation launched by US, Britain and France against Syrian regime is appropriate reaction: Turkish Foreign Ministry

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan speaks during a meeting of his ruling AK Party at the Parliament in Ankara, Turkey April 10, 2018.

The White Helmets, a civil defense agency, blamed the Assad regime for the alleged chemical attack, which it said killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others.

In a statement, the Turkish foreign ministry said the US-led operation "has eased humanity's conscience in the face of" the suspected chemical attack.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he had discussed with his USA and Russian counterparts potential steps for peace in Syria, after a series of phone calls in recent days.

"Prevention of all the massacres conducted through conventional and chemical weapons depends on providing a political solution in Syria as soon as possible".

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said the strikes had not been launched via Turkey's southern Incirlik air base. "Base Incirlik was not involved in the strike".

"We see this attack as a sanction against the use of chemical weapons and a stern warning to Assad against attacking his own people with chemicals", he added. "As for use of chemical weapons, both our position and position of worldwide community is clear", the president said, noting that everyone harshly condemn the use of chemical weapons.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says the use of chemical weapon against civilians in a Damascus suburb is "unforgivable" but says Turkey is urging all sides to refrain from actions that will cause further turmoil in Syria. In recent months however it has closely worked with Russian Federation for a political solution in Syria even though Moscow remains a chief ally of the regime.
