Arizona Education United and the Arizona Education Association should urge state teachers to lobby, organize ballot petitions and educate communities with facts instead of considering a walkout that will damage support for public education for years to come.

"If our kids are not allowed to be in school to get an education how do we expect them to excel in life, I mean we can't go on with this forever", Irvin said.

The Oklahoma walkout began on April 2 and affected about 500,000 of the state's 700,000 public school students.

Teachers - who took to social media to share photos of outdated textbooks and broken classroom furniture - had also called for a $200 million increase in education funding, but the state passed an increase of just $50 million. Outside and inside the capitol, teachers held impromptu meetings to discuss how to sustain their walkout next week. I am not saying that the teachers are doing what they are doing to make themselves look better rather they are probably forced to teach to the test because that is what we are possibly putting too much emphasis on.

Another teacher's union, the Oklahoma City chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, announced it will poll members throughout Friday on whether to return to the classroom. "Let's be familiar with our duties as outlined in the said Act and its regulations so that the public has little to accuse us of", he stressed.

StateImpact Oklahoma's Emily Wendler reports on the Oklahoma Education Association's announcement.

The union reported Friday that the survey's online link was shared with nonmembers and resulted in more votes than official union members.

"Algebra I is a class that's generally taught in eighth and ninth grade, and a few sophomores should be enrolled once they attend CHS", she said. Before the strike, state lawmakers passed a pay raise of $6,100 on average for teachers and $1,250 for school professionals, funded by the first major tax hike in the state in almost 30 years.

If there is a walkout, it could be a long one: Teachers statewide are demanding a 20 percent raise from the Legislature.

Alberto Morejon, the eighth grade social studies teacher at Stillwater Junior High School who started the Facebook page organizing a walkout that now has nearly 80,000 members, wrote that Stillwater teachers will still be at the capitol on Thursday.

Jordan said he didn't see any tax increase measures coming before lawmakers, at least not in the coming days. "Even if (the walkout) ends, there's going to be change later this year". Other districts sent delegations but kept classes open.
