It was the second US military strike against the Assad regime prompted by its alleged use of banned chemical weapons against rebels during a civil war that began in March 2011.

"To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?" These are not the actions of a man.

Shortly after the attack, the Syrian presidency posted on Twitter, "Honorable souls can not be humiliated".

Immediately before Israel's claim that the Iranian drone was armed, the leader of the Lebanese terror group said that "The Israelis committed a historic mistake. and put themselves in direct combat with Iran", Nasrallah warned in a televised address.

The seemingly limited strikes with no apparent future strategy for how to deal with the wider civil war was a cause for relief and celebration by Assad supporters, but criticised by the Syrian Opposition. "USA president, United Kingdom prime minister and the president of France are criminals", Khamenei said in a speech cited by Iranian TV.

An Israeli official said Israel was notified of the strikes ahead of time.

May said Britain and its allies had sought to use every diplomatic means to stop the use of chemical weapons, but had been repeatedly thwarted, citing a Russian veto of an independent investigation into the Douma attack at the U.N. Security Council this week.

It said initial indications were that the precision weapons and meticulous target planning had "resulted in a successful attack".

A USA official told Reuters the strikes were aimed at multiple targets and involved Tomahawk cruise missiles.

"It does not exist anymore", McKenzie said of the research facility.

"The aggression is in blatant violation of the worldwide rules and regulations and ignores Syria's rights to national sovereignty and territorial integrity", the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed Britain's involvement in the intervention. They were French President Emmanuel Macron's first major military decision since taking office a year ago.

"We would have preferred an alternative path".

Johnson said: "The world is united in its disgust for any use of chemical weapons, but especially against civilians".

Russia's ambassador to the United States warned that there would be consequences for the attacks, adding that it was not acceptable to insult Russia's president. "We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", Anatoly Antonov, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. said. "Again, we are being threatened". It was revealing that Lavrov's statement calling the missile strike a "dangerous development" did not actually call out Israel, despite Russian Federation having publicly identified Israel as the perpetrator, but instead warned the USA and its military coalition partners.
