United Kingdom ministers back action to deter Syrian chemical weapon use

Syrian state media slammed Western strikes on Saturday as illegal and "doomed to fail", after the US, France, and Britain launched a joint operation against the Damascus government.

"Theresa May should have sought parliamentary approval, not trailed after Donald Trump".

In her comments, May also alluded to a nerve agent attack in Britain last month on a former Russian spy and his daughter.

Russian Federation circulated a draft resolution calling for condemnation of the military action, but Britain´s ambassador said the strikes were "both right and legal" to alleviate humanitarian suffering in Syria.

May insisted that the strikes were not about intervening in the Syrian civil war or regime change.

Mrs May, who did not secure approval from lawmakers before the attack, said that the targeted military action was a direct response to the use of chemical weapons by the regime of Bashar Al Assad.

Four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s joined the co-ordinated missile strikes at 2am, launching Storm Shadow missiles at a base 15 miles west of Homs. The decision to strike, after days of deliberations, marked Trump's second order to attack Syria; he authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017.

Russian Federation has warned the West against attacking its Syrian ally President Bashar al-Assad, who is also supported by Iran, and says there is no evidence of a chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma near Damascus. She maintained that the military action was "right and legal" and sends a message to "others". Moscow has denied any involvement.

"Now that the US, France and the United Kingdom have decided on their reaction to the use of chemical weapons last weekend, the need for a diplomatic offensive is more imperative than ever".

In Douma last Saturday, a chemical weapons attack killed up to 75 people, including young children, in circumstances of pure horror.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria´s chemical weapons facilities.

According to her, the British Government believes that the performed attacks on the territory of Syria were successful.

Multiple places in Syria came under attack by U.S., British and French military forces after President Donald Trump ordered a military strike against the war-torn country in support of terrorists, however Syria succeeded to shoot down 13 missiles.

"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace", said Jeremy Corbyn, the veteran leftist leader of the main opposition Labour Party.

So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime.

Parliament voted down British military action against Assad's government in 2013, in an embarrassment for May's predecessor, David Cameron.

"Britain should be playing a leadership role to bring about a ceasefire in the conflict, not taking instructions from Washington and putting British military personnel in harm's way", Corbyn said.

May held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss possible action on Thursday and there had been calls for the British parliament to be consulted before any air strikes. No debate in Parliament about the action or its potential consequences.
