America is better than Trump's cruel immigration policies

Trump administration will fingerprint child migrants' parents

Is the federal government equipped to handle the new "zero tolerance" policy? "It's a disgusting thing, we have to break up families". Referencing recent reports about the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) being unable to track down almost 1,500 unaccompanied alien children (UACs), and hundreds of illegal immigrant parents being separated from their children at the border, CNN asked the deep question: How could a mother so heartlessly share an image in which she is seen embracing her son?

According to a report by USA Today, between October and December 2017, ORR was able to contact 7,635 sponsored children but can not "determine with certainty the whereabouts of 1,475 children".

Numerous unaccompanied minors are coming from Central American nations and fleeing gang violence and poverty.

The children are considered unaccompanied minors. "You've broken USA law". Under U.S. protocol, if parents are jailed, their children would be separated from them. About 10% of the time, the minors are placed with people who aren't related to them.

Detainees sleep and watch television in a holding cell where hundreds of mostly Central American immigrant children were being processed and held at the CBP Nogales Placement Center on June 18, 2014.

Central American migrants stand in line for food in Tijuana, Mexico, while waiting to cross into the United States in April.

The government doesn't know where the children are?

These children aren't unaccompanied in the traditional sense - they arrive accompanied, and then ICE rips away their accompaniment and says, "Gosh, looks unaccompanied to me!" To step up the enforcement of the law, sessions revealed that he had put in place measures including sending additional lawyers, immigration judges, and prosecutors to work on cases involving handling legal issues surrounding the law, and especially in expediting the process of applying for asylum.

"These activists have used precious resources and energy to target the Trump administration, which of course, we should", Baraka said. In 1,475 cases, nobody picked up the phone. For example, some of the sponsors themselves might be considered illegal immigrants, explaining why they wouldn't want to contact the federal government.

Advocates say those settings are typically less restrictive, and in some cases, children are allowed to attend public schools in their communities while their immigration cases play out in federal courts.

"What's happened is the exception to the rule is now becoming the rule", said Young, who said prosecutions under Obama were far more selective.

"If you call a friend and they don't answer the phone, you don't assume that they've been kidnapped", HHS' Steven Wagner said.

It's not highly unusual to fail to keep track of many minors who came unaccompanied to the border. "This was Attorney General Jeff Sessions saying it straight out", says Philip Wolgin.

This month, the administration announced that it would prosecute all adults, including parents, who cross illegally.

The standoff between the Democrats and Republicans on the issue of immigrants continues with the President now blaming the Democrats for the enactment of a law that seemingly breaks immigrant families apart. The photo captions reference children who crossed the border as unaccompanied minors. Yet these Twitter users were errant in failing to realize that the photos taken at the Arizona detention facility were shot in 2014 (during the Obama administration) and at the time had nothing to do with the non-existent Trump administration. They are then placed with relatives, juvenile detention centers or foster care.

Because of the "zero tolerance" policy, there are more separations happening.

Officials argued Tuesday that releasing the entire family would remove all consequences for adults trying to enter the U.S. They said it would make the country a "magnet" for more illegal immigration, and that they were barred from the alternative of detaining families as a unit by the Flores decision.

That number is expected to jump once Trump's new "zero tolerance" policy is enacted, which would enforce criminal charges against people crossing the border illegally with few or no previous offences.

The photos are, in fact, from 2014, meaning that children were held in this condition during the Obama Administration.

Nasseri agreed that recent news coverage may bring awareness to major immigration issues, but the treatment of undocumented immigrants deters those who already are in the US from petitioning to gain proper documentation.

The hashtag #WhereAreTheChildren has been trending on Twitter, bringing attention to almost 1,500 "lost" immigrant children and whether the Trump administration is to blame for it.
