Apple Reportedly Shifting to OLED, Suppliers Hit

Japan Display now is not producing OLED panels but is planning to start by 2019 if it finds investment to launch a production line. If true, Apple's move would be negative for both manufacturers, which have so far been unable to mass produce OLEDs and now supply LCD screens.

In addition to the new iPhone SE, Apple is widely expected to launch three iPhone models this year: a 5.8-inch "iPhone X 2" and larger 6.5-inch "iPhone X Plus", both of which use OLED, and a cheaper 6.1-inch version that features an LCD. If it is planning three devices with OLED displays, it could suggest that either Apple want to bump up the prices of all of its iPhone models, or it has been able to get the displays more cheaply to maintain existing prices. This will be the next step after the two OLED phones that are expected to appear this fall.

Apple may start using next generation screens for all of its models next year. The iPhone 8 and older models use LCD screens, while the iPhone X uses an OLED screen.

Following the release of Electronic Times's report, shares in Japan Display tumbled 7.97%. LCD screens are cheaper to build, while OLED screens reproduce colors much more accurately, but are hard to produce. If, however, Apple plans to still release three iPhones next year, chances are one will still be an LCD model. A Japan Display spokesman declined to comment.

OLED's victory of LCD technology is still not clear-cut. The Ewing, N.J. -based company supplies critical technology and materials used to make OLED displays. Sales of the iPhone X with an OLED screen were crimped by its starting price of $999. Moving to all OLED screens next year would make it hard to keep iPhones affordable for mass market consumers.

The biggest OLED manufacturers now are LG Display and Samsung Display.
