Wearing his father's badge, the boy returned to Sullivan Elementary School with dozens of cops by his side, WNDU reported.

Dakota's dad, 45-year-old Rob Pitt, was killed last week after a three-hour standoff with Christopher Wolfe, 21, who was suspected of murder. "It's not like any other job you're going to have, guys are close, you form bonds you wouldn't form in a different profession. When somebody's in need, we go, especially for a fallen officer and his kid".

THPD sold similar bracelets in 2011 after the line-of-duty death of Officer Brent Long.

He wore his father's badge and was presented a SWAT shirt.

"Our hope is that Dakota's first day back to school after his father's passing is one that he will remember forever and that he will always know how much his father's sacrifice meant to all of us", she added.

He says he simply wants to show his support and it's not the first time he's seen how much community support means to the officers. "It was really great the officers came to support him".

For his first day back to school, Dakota asked if one of his dad's friends could drive him in his dad's police vehicle. "Blood doesn't always make family, but I think the "Blue Family" went above and beyond", said Kelli Jones, Rob Pitts' sister.
