The air-conditioned bus with two-by-two seating arrangement was travelling from Muzaffarpur to New Delhi, a distance of about 1,062 km.

Soon after the accident, the Bihar disaster management and relief minister had said, "It is a really sad incident".

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Murli Manohar Manjhi had said that 11 people were undergoing treatment at hospitals for injuries sustained in the incident. Though one of the officials, on the condition of anonymity, said that those dead were charred beyond recognition.

According to police, six to eight persons had managed to come out of the bus while surviving passengers claim that only 13 passengers, besides the driver and a helper were inside the vehicle when the incident took place. "There is zero casualty in the bus fire and all passengers were taken out alive", he told PNS. They with burns was taken to a local hospital.

The fire was reportedly caused after the bus overturned and fell into a roadside pit while the driver attempted to save a two-wheeler. "Before anyone could react and people could gather to rescue the trapped passengers, the bus busted into flames which engulfed it immediately barring people to go nearby for rescue work", the SHO said. Local administration officials are present at the spot.

Bihar Disaster Management Minister Dinesh Chandra Yadav said the bus, run by transport firm Sahil Raj Travels, was said to be at a high speed and overturned due to sudden application of brakes.

Expressing grief over the horrific accident, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said the government authorities would extend all help to the affected families. "They might have left the spot on their own", said Yadav.

"About five people have been rescued in the accident".
