The newspaper also reports that he is now Israel's richest citizen.

He qualifies for Israeli citizenship through his Jewish heritage.

Abramovich, who was reportedly in Russian Federation in recent days, flew into Tel Aviv on a private jet and received an Israeli identity card, local Channel 10 television reported.

Another official told Channel 10 News that Mr Abramovich submitted a citizenship request "like any other person" with Israel's Moscow embassy and was accepted.

His British visa expired last month but it was taking longer than usual to get it renewed, Reuters news agency reported. The British government has blamed Moscow for the attack, an allegation Russian Federation denies.

Russian-born billionaire Roman Abramovich has been granted Israeli citizenship following a recent souring of relations between Moscow and London.

Roman Abramovich, the owner of English Premier League giants Chelsea Football Club, is "eligible" to receive Israeli citizenship, a spokesperson for the Israeli Interior Ministry was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The Chelsea owner will be eligible for 10 years of tax-free status in Israel, during which time he will not need to declare the source of his income.

Mr. Abramovich, who owns British football club Chelsea, has lived in the U.K.in recent years, but sought Israeli citizenship once the United Kingdom refused to extend his visa, allegedly due to his ties to Russia's President Vladimir Putin, Ynet reported.

His new mansion, in the Tel Aviv neighborhood of Neve Tzedek, is a former hotel previously owned by Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, according to the Israeli website Ynet.

It is reported that a private plane 51-year-old Abramovich landed at the airport Ben-Gurion on Monday, may 28.
