A bear that was involved in an attack on a girl in Colorado was tracked down and killed, according to reports.

The mother told wildlife officers the girl went outside after hearing noises she thought could have been made by a dog.

The mother said she heard screaming and found her daughter being dragged by a large black bear, but the animal dropped the girl and ran off after she shouted at it. "She screamed at it - and by doing so she probably saved her little girl's life", CPW spokesman Mike Porras told FOX31 Denver.

Wildlife agents were hunting for the bear with tracking hounds and had set traps to catch it.

She was listed in fair condition in the afternoon but chief operating officer Bryan Johnson says her family didn't want to release any more information. "Based on bear behavior, it's possible this bear will come back to the area".

He said she had 77 external stitches and more internally.

Paediatric surgeon Charles Breaux Jr said the bear apparently bit her but that she did not have any injuries to her brain or organs, and did not suffer any fractures.

The girl's father, Duane Cyr, identified her as Kimberly Cyr, 5.

The bear had yet to be captured as of Sunday night.

Low food quantities force bears to head into neighborhoods and cars to look for garbage to eat.

CPW advises the public to avoid attracting bears, and all wildlife, to their residences by removing attractants, including trash, bird feeders and other potential sources of food.

"Black bears are trying to share space with an ever-growing human population", the department's website stated.
