Giuliani Doubles Down on Comparing FBI to Nazi Stormtroopers: 'They Prove it Every Day'

Rudy Giuliani and former FBI Director James Comey clashed on Thursday after the former mayor accused the FBI of behaving like "stormtroopers" when they raided Michael Cohen last month. In doing so, Giuliani referred to the agents as "stormtroopers, " a term originally used to describe specialist soldiers of the German army in World War I and adopted by the Nazi Party for members of its paramilitary wing.

Mr. Giuliani's assertion that Mr. Comey was sacked over the Russian Federation inquiry did line up with accounts from both Mr. Comey and White House officials who have been interviewed by the office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, whose appointment was prompted in part by the abrupt firing of Mr. Comey.

Trump fired Comey last May.

On Fox News Wednesday night, Giuliani said Trump did the Lester Holt interview "to explain to the American people the president was not the target of the investigation".

"He fired him and he said, 'I'm free of this guy, '" Giuliani said of Trump's dismissal of Comey. "Our country would be better off if our leaders tried to be like them, rather than comparing them to Nazis", Comey wrote in a Thursday tweet.

When Comey refused Trump's requests, their relationship soured, according to Comey.

I know the New York FBI.

"There are a number of reasons why James Comey was sacked". Mr. Giuliani's comments directly contradicted Mr. Trump, who had said he had no knowledge of the payments. "You're a disgraceful liar", Mr. Giuliani told Sean Hannity.

The exchange underscored the fact that almost a full year after Comey was dismissed, the White House still lacks a cohesive explanation of what was behind Trump's decision.

Giuliani said he feared that Mueller's team would be more inclined to believe contradictory testimony from Comey on a range of issues.

Mr. Comey testified to Congress that during calls to him that spring, the president asked him to get out word that he was not being investigated.

During a raid last month, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized records about Cohen's clients and personal finances - including documents related to money that Cohen paid adult-film star Stormy Daniels to remain silent about an alleged decade-old affair with Trump.
