At Least 16 Killed in Varanasi Flyover Collapse

Multiple people are feared dead after a bridge under construction collapsed in the Indian city of Varanasi on the afternoon of Tuesday May 15.

Rescue operation being carried out for a man trapped under an under-construction flyover that collapsed in Varanasi on Tuesday.

Many of those who were trapped in the debris is suspected to be labourers who were working. Several vehicles are also reported to be stuck under rubble.

Photographs and video from the scene showed cars and a bus crushed beneath the weight of the concrete, many of which still held people inside. CM Yogi and deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya are in Varanasi to take stock of the situation and have set up a high-powered 3-member panel to look into the incident. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief and directed the administration to speed up rescue operation.

The general secretary of the UP Engineers Association, SS Niranjan, when contacted, said that unlike the other cases in Varanasi an important factor was also of traffic management which can not be undermined. Police are also opening a formal investigation into the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, a public sector company.

"Several people are feared trapped under the collapsed under-construction flyover".

The state government has constituted a three-member committee to probe the technical reasons for the incident. The chief minister also announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation for families of those who died in the incident and Rs 2 lakh for those injured. Naidu too condoled the deaths in the incident in a tweet. Local administration was providing emergency services. "I spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minsiter Adityanath about the situation", Modi said.
