EU proposes to ban plastic straws, stirs, and cotton buds

The proposal, which is created to prevent and reduce the impact of certain plastic products on the environment, and in particular the marine environment, sets a number of different policy measures to tackle these problematic single-use products, from bans and reduction efforts, to labelling and extended producer responsibility schemes [2].

The EU has announced a crackdown on single use plastics in a bid to reduce pollution in seas which is harmful to the marine environment and potentially damaging to human health.

However, the proposal has faced a lot of criticis from the plastics industry. "This means different measures will be applied to different products".

The EU Commission is optimistic that the EU Parliament and Council will prioritize this draft and turn it into law before the European elections a year from now. The first legislative proposal from the Plastics Strategy aims to help the European Union clean up the continent's beaches and waterways. Significantly reduced production and use of packaging for crisps, nuts, crackers, and candy wrappers that use plastic.

Earlier this year, Britain also said it planned to ban the sale of plastic straws and other single-use products.

Under the proposal, single-use plastic products including straws, cotton buds, cutlery, balloon sticks and drink stirrers with readily available alternatives will be banned and replaced with more environmentally sustainable materials.

He added that there would be a particular emphasis on substituting banned or reduced items with eco-friendly alternatives. "Once we collect the plastics, then we can use it again". Environmentalists estimate that over one billion straws are thrown away daily.

Brussels said the move is in response to public sentiment and projects the ban would ultimately save more than $25 billion in environmental damage and clean-up costs. "So [when] you get them so easily, you really need the legislation to drive change".

Plastic manufacturers in Europe represented by Plastics Europe said that the ban isn't a solution and that more resources should be dedicated to waste management for better collection of plastic.

With plastics making up the vast majority of trash in our oceans and contaminating our drinking water, the European Commission on Monday proposed a new directive to mitigate the problem. CNN reported that it could three or four years for the rules to go into effect.
