"Federal is capitalized only when used as part of a proper noun".

She taught English composition for 17 years in SC public schools.

"If it had been written in high school, I'd give it a D", Ms Mason told South Carolina's Greenville News.

Yvonne Mason, an English teacher wrote to the White House after the Parkland shooting calling on Trump to meet with the relatives personally.

"Poor writing is not something I abide".

She picked up grammatical errors such as "nation" and "states" being incorrectly capitalised.

A sentence about a "rule" banning devices that turn legal guns into illegal machine guns was unclear.

"I did not mention the dangling modifier", she said. A photo of the letter, with Mason's comments in purple ink, has become a social media sensation.

Mason accepted she wrote the letter in frustration as she wanted to do something for the families affected by the incident.

The White House sent Mason the correspondence in response to a letter she sent about the Parkland school shooting last February 14. "If someone is capable of doing better, then they should do better".

"If my students turned that in they would get exactly the same marks", she said.

'When you get letters from the highest level of government, you expect them to be at least mechanically correct, ' Mason told the Greenville News.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mason called the letter "poorly worded" and "stylistically appalling". "Otherwise, you're going to be misunderstood".

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of SC, sent "beautiful" letters that struck a tone that "makes me more important than him", she said.

She has written to several legislators in SC, where she taught Advanced Placement English language and composition.

Retired English teacher Yvonne Mason recently made waves on social media after she chose to step up and do something that the White House staff has seemingly not done very well since President Donald Trump took office - she corrected the syntax of the commander-in-chief's correspondence.
