Frances Bean Cobain Loses Historic Nirvana Guitar in Divorce Battle

Frances Bean Cobain loses Kurt Cobain’s iconic ‘Unplugged’ guitar in divorce settlement Far Out Staff

The dispute over the guitar has made headlines over the past two years, as it continued to be a point of contention in the divorce: Silva claimed that Frances gave it to him as a wedding present, which Frances denies.

It's believed to be the last guitar that the Nirvana frontman played before his death.

The instrument in question is a 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar which Kurt famously played during his iconic MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, just months before his death.

As per the agreement, Silva is entitled to Kurt Cobain's famous MTV Unplugged guitar, based on a supposed verbal agreement.

News about the finalization of the divorce comes a few days after the court sided with Frances and Love in the legal battle to keep photos from Kurt's suicide in 1994 sealed.

Frances will get to keep the home they purchased while together and Silva will have to pay his own legal bills. According to the ruling, the photos are exempt from the state's Public Records Act, and releasing them would "violate the Cobain family's due process rights under the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution".

Two years ago, Hole frontwoman and Cobain's widow Courtney Love gave a statement accusing Lee of trying to exploit Cobain's death, which he claims to have been investigating for more than 23 years.

Frances Bean filed for divorce in early 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.

Soaked in Bleach, a documentary exploring the conspiracy theories around Cobain's death, was released in 2014.

Documents filed in late November listed Love as a potential witness in any trial, and that evidence would include receipts from the guitar shop where the Martin was purchased, and text messages from Silva to a third party, according to TheBlast.com.
