Not long after web-based game developers began complaining about broken audio in their products, a Chrome product manager said his team was processing the feedback and looking for solutions. Content contained in HTML5's video and audio tags will still be silenced, though, limiting the impact of auto-playing audio on what Pallett says is "most media playback" around the Web (which was the original intent of the Chrome auto-play policy).

Google has made it clear that this is a temporary change and that it has been made to give developers time to change their code.

Google has rolled back an update for its Chrome browser after concerns from game developers. Sadly, the change had an unintended side effect: Many browser-based games, which make use of the Web Audio application programming interface (API), fell silent. It is working to "improve things for users and developers".

Meanwhile, the implementation delay is created to give "Web Audio API developers (e.g. gaming, audio applications, some RTC features) more time to update their code".

Other comments call for a response from the Chrome development team, particularly with regard to suggestions for modifying the policy to indicate when audio is being disabled, and to enable users to easily switch it back on, either temporarily or permanently.

But the update also broke a series of apps, games and interactive art in the process, preventing them from playing audio for alerts and other elements, and causing complaints from developers and users of these interactive web apps. Some feel that Google is restricting the spirit of a free and open web buy forcing their standards on the world's most popular browser.

To correct that, Google said Tuesday it's temporarily removing the autoplay policy for the Web Audio API from Chrome 66.

The autoplay-video blocker is created to fix one of the greatest problems of the Internet: autoplaying videos on websites.

"I believe Chrome could find a policy which accommodates developers while still protecting the principle users should explicitly authorize websites to play sound", developer Andi McClure writes in the Chromium thread.
