Pompeo is expected to meet with Trump at the White House on Wednesday afternoon and then head north to rendezvous with Kim Yong Chol to discuss the June 12 summit in Singapore, the State Department said.

Kim Young Chol, the vice chairman of North Korea, heading now to NY. Referring to denuclearization, Sanders said that, "as long as that is part of the discussion, we're going to focus on the June 12" date.

Kim Chang Son, left, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's de facto chief of staff, prepares to get into a vehicle as he leaves a hotel in Singapore on May 29, 2018.

"Looking forward to meeting with Kim Yong Chol in NY to discuss @Potus potential summit with Chairman Kim".

The US was looking for CVID, "complete verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation", the official said, but did not specify the timing of such a process or whether it would have to be carried out all at once, or in phases.

Kim flew from Pyongyang to Beijing Tuesday with North Korean officials including Choe Kang-il, acting director general for North American affairs in its Foreign Ministry, and Kim Song-hye, a senior official from the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers' Party.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has maintained a hard line against the North, calling for continued sanctions and a maximum-pressure campaign on Pyongyang.

The US Secretary of State later tweeted more about what was on the menu, adding corn and cheese.

The Trump administration is believed to have granted him a temporary waiver this time to allow him to visit NY, where North Korea has a diplomatic mission to the United Nations.

China has repeatedly said it is fully enforcing United Nations sanctions against North Korea and it would punish any Chinese company breaking them.

But the leadership in Pyongyang is believed to regard nuclear weapons as crucial to its survival and has rejected unilaterally disarming. A team of USA officials was also in Singapore for preparations.

He has connived in the deaths of South Korean sailors.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted Seoul's Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon as saying in a speech on Wednesday that the differences between North Korea and the United States on the denuclearization issue remained "quite significant" and it would not be easy to narrow the gap.

In a letter to Kim last week, Trump declared he was calling off the summit scheduled for 12 June in Singapore, after a spat broke out between Washington and Pyongyang over military exercises the United States conducted with South Korea, and expectations of the outcome of the unprecedented meeting between the two national leaders.

Trump had mused that Kim's "attitude" had changed after the North Korean leader's surprise visit to China two weeks ago, suggesting China was pushing Kim away from the table.

The two Koreas have technically been at war for decades, even though the Korean War's military combat ended in 1953, because a peace agreement was never signed.
